In my opinion, his 1986-87 campaign was his most impressive statistically, when he put up 23/14.6/4.9 with 5.7 offensive rebounds and leading the league in 2-point shooting with an astounding 64.3%! People disregard him because of his 6’6” height at the power-forward position, but we’ve never seen such an interestingly skilled player. During his MVP 1993 year, he averaged 25.6/12.2/5.1 (points/rebounds/assists) while shooting a solid 52% from the field and 56% from two. He won MVP and led a solid Suns team to the Finals in 1993 (giving Jordan his second toughest Finals competition behind the never spoken of 1996 Sonics series), and came second in MVP voting in1989-90 behind Magic Johnson despite actually garnering the majority of the first place votes, which I think is the only time in NBA history that that happened.Īnyway, take some of these numbers on for size. In fact, there was a period in the early 90s where Barkley may have been the second best offensive player in the game behind Michael Jordan. In fact, I’d wager that he is one of the most underrated players in the history of the NBA, right alongside John Havlicek, Jerry West, and Bill Russell ( Oh Cody, why do you say these guys are underrated? Perhaps you should keep reading the series….). Whatever it is you call him, Charles Barkley was one hell of a player from back in the day. That one big guy that talks on TV during NBA games once in a while. If that doesn’t make you want to squat I don’t know what will.
